What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver due to viral infection and also abuse of drugs and alcohol. Hepatitis can also occur if your body produces antibodies against the liver tissues. Hepatitis is scary because it can lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Fibrosis is the scarring of tissues. In the case of cirrhosis, the scar tissue replaces the healthy tissues in your liver.
Types of Hepatitis:
There are five types of Hepatitis – A, B, C, D and E each virus has symptoms and stems due to various reasons in the body. Hepatitis B, C and D are chronic while A and E are short term and acute.
Hepatitis A – This is caused because of the HAV virus and it is contracted if and individual consumes food or water, that is contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. Symptoms of Hepatitis A are fever, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhoea and jaundice.
Hepatitis B – HBV is transmitted by infected body fluids such as blood, semen or saliva. Substance abuse, sharing razors, toothbrushes and fornicating with an infected person, increases the chances of getting HBV. This can lead to life threatening liver diseases or liver cancer. Symptoms of this virus are abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, jaundice and severe fatigue.
Hepatitis C – Like HBV, HCV is also transmitted through bodily fluids. Sharing needles and through intercourse, this virus can be contracted. Symptoms of this category of virus are also abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, jaundice and severe fatigue.
Hepatitis D – HDV is also known as delta hepatitis and is a later stage of a prolonged HBV. This virus is called as super-infection and causes fatal liver diseases. This virus progresses rapidly and causes cirrhosis of liver in no time.
Hepatitis E – HEV primarily grows in areas with poor sanitation and contaminated water. It last until 6 weeks and only becomes fatal if it is found acute. Symptoms of HVE are fever, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, itching and rashes, joint pain, jaundice and enlarged liver.
It is important that we take all necessary precautions to avoid falling prey to this disease. Maintain your weight, manage your cholesterol and stay within recommended alcohol limits. Just by eating right and maintaining basic hygiene routine, one can avoid the contraction of this virus.
