However, the association with smoking in certain situations is just as powerful, perhaps more so than nicotine. This is why people choose to smoke by reaching for a cigarette when they are stressed because they believe it will calm them down. Or they may be bored and decide that cigarette will ease the boredom. Some people connect having a drink with smoking a cigarette, but there is no logical connection between the two.

These are all forms of pattern matching – when I think of this, I do that – and when the patterns are badly matched the problem is established. Stopping smoking, losing weight, and overcoming anxiety are all achieved by getting the thought patterns working correctly.
