Cannabis Linked to Weight Loss

Cannabis has now become linked to weight loss. This statement may boggle many people since cannabis is typically linked to munchies, and once you get the munchies you’re not exactly craving a kale salad. In fact weed lovers will typically eat an additional 600 calories per day.

The munchies are a scientifically proven phenomenon. Based on an American study, the munchies can heighten your sense of smell and stimulate appetite. Given what we know about the munchies you would likely assume that increased use of marijuana would certainly lead to greater caloric consumption and possibly obesity. However from multiple studies it seems that it’s quite the opposite.

Despite the contradiction, cannabis has in fact been known to lower weight, lower body mass index (BMI) and lead to smaller waistlines.

It turns out that the lazy stoner stereotype is untrue, when in fact marijuana consumers are typically more active and less likely to be obese. Cannabis has been known to reduce obesity rates by more than 30%. But how can this paradox be?

In 2015 a study was performed on rats by giving them daily doses of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the compound in cannabis that is psychoactive or known for causing the “high” when consumed. The rats were given food to cause them to gain weight and eventually given THC treatment for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks the mice began to lose weight.

Canadian scientists believe that this weight loss is caused by the creation of intestinal microbes which are microorganisms which work to breakdown food in the digestive tract. The THC compound affected the ratio of weight promoting microbes in the gut.

Cannabis has also been known to reduce insulin levels based on a study from the American Journal where marijuana was found to have a ‘metabolic effect’ on users.

It is not only well known that THC has powerful antimicrobial qualities that can promote weight loss but another compound found in cannabis called cannabidiol (CBD) has also been proven to reduce appetite.
